Chiayi Park

1937

Oil on canvas

60.5×72.5 cm

Returned to Taiwan after living as an expat in Tokyo, Japan and then Shanghai, China, Chen Cheng-Po developed a deeper care and connection with his homeland. In the final stage of his artistic life, Chen strived to combine his care for the land with techniques and ideology from Chinese art.  As manifested by Chen’s series of artworks of “Chiayi Park” and “Tamsui”, rhythm plays an essential role in his artistic style.  Chen’s visual rhythm was embodied in a variety of forms, including layering, transition, continuation, and repetition.  In this painting, Chiayi Park, one can observe the created rhythm and visual fluid motion by the continuation and repetition of the “arcs”, including the composition of numerous leaves and cranes.  One can even imagine that the canvas served as a sheet music with harmonious music played out.
