A notable character in the Golden Puppet Show, Guai Lao Zi, or the Weird Old Man, is known for his humorous personality and a warm heart. The Weird Old Man is forever sixty-three years old and has the martial arts abilities of Sound of the Magic Piano and Divine Horns. His weapon is called the “Magic Sound” and comprises of three stages. The Weird Old Man’s favorite catchphrase is “now you know,” which in Taiwanese is “jin ma li jia zhai.” In reference to his old age, his friends often call him big brother. Guai Lao Zi, along with Er Jia and Liu San make up the earliest trio group for the puppet show. Weird Lao Zi lives in the Wutong (Wútóng) Forest and is famous far and wide for his knowledge of Qihuang (Qíhuáng), ancient Chinese medicine. He has excellent medical skills and is good at playing the piano, giving him the name “Miracle Doctor and the Demonic Qin.” Guai Lao Zi later becomes acquainted with Liu San and Er Jia by rescuing the knights from the Central Plains, and they become good friends. Together, they help the main character, Shih Yen Wen (Shǐhyènwén), solve his problems, find the jade seal, solve the king’s danger, eliminate evil, and become the backing of the righteous path.
